There! I’ve admitted it.
I feel better. Twice in just a couple of months I’ve confessed my hatred. First of smoothie bars, and now, of a gentleman in Anderson, S.C. by the name of Perry Noble. Hatred can be such a cruel master.
So, what’s my beef with the Noblemeister? Allow me to enumerate:
1. He’s in Anderson, South Carolina
I live in North Carolina. I have this long-standing love/hate thing with South Carolina. Growing up in southeastern North Carolina, very close to the South Carolina border and Myrtle Beach, I spent mucho time in the southern Carolina. Most of my childhood and teen memories of the southern neighbor are pleasant and evoke fun memories. But—isn’t there always one of those—there was a rivalry. Those of us living on the border contended with this rivalry daily. Jokes abound, insults are the norm. So, naturally, there is a tendency to have a bit of a condescending, look down the nose, mildly snooty air about our southern counterpart.
2. He’s so dang transparent!
Come on! When you’re as successful, you’re supposed to have a air of mystic about you. With Perry, what you see is what you get…that’s not how a pastor is supposed to be!
3. He makes Christianity way too attractive and simple.
Someone needs to tell him that its not supposed to be fun, life-changing, and understandable. Why, he gives traditional Christianity a bad name!
4. He motivates you.
Why in the world would he do that? Doesn’t he understand that the Christian is supposed to just sit in the pew and mouth nice platitudes? There isn’t supposed to be action behind our words.
and finally, I hate Perry Noble because
5. He honestly wants to see others succeed.
Go figure. Makes no sense does it?
Perry Nobel is definitely someone I hate . . . to not be like. Thanks Perry for the inspiration!

Agreed wholeheartedly. I’m a pastor in Wilmore, KY (home of Asbury College and Asbury Theological Seminary). We went to Newspring for their Unleash conference last week and had a great time. Perry is who he is and who he is in love with Jesus and totally OK with who Jesus has created him to be.
I am grateful for leaders like Perry and you nailed exactly the kind of things that make him an awesome, Spirit-blessed leader!

Maybe we brushed shoulders at NewSpring!
Our church took 15 from here in Wilmington, NC and it made a profound impact on us.
I’m honored that God would put people like Perry in the spotlight so folks like us can personify what it means to be passionate about your faith — Perry takes the heat while we are allowed to grow! Don’t we serve an amazing God?!

Perhaps we did. It was just me and another fellow from our church, but I wish I had brought the whole staff and a few other leaders.
Awesome experience.

Actually, the way you threw me off by the way your titled your message, leading me to believe you really hated him, but then showed your admiration and appreciation for Perry, was very Perry-esque. So perhaps your are more “like” him than “not”!
I also hold Perry in high esteem, as a member of his church and seeing him as a man who is completely transparent. No artifice, no fakeness, just a man who is passionately and completely in love with Jesus Christ. Not a bad guy to be like at all!
Joe // April 8, 2007 at 4:05 pm |
Wayne,
I think Perry is the best thing the church has seen in a very long time. I am very much “like him, and have absolutely nothing against him.
I know of nothing he does that I disagree with (surely there must be something! I’m a cantankerous fellow and never agree with everything that anyone says; I just don’t know anything that Perry believes, does, insinuates, dreams, or eats that upsets me. Maybe one day I’ll find something!
)
You should be proud to have him as your pastor. The man is a true Jesus follower.

Whoa! I “googled” Perry Noble just to see what would come up and saw your “I hate Perry Noble…” Ready to defend my pastor I clicked on your link. Love it! You are so right! He is awesome! We have been members of NewSpring for several years and I look forward to every Sunday. I never leave there without being changed.
My son and I had the true honor to volunteer during Unleash. It was a profound day in my life to have the opportunity to look down from the 2nd floor and pray for the hundreds of church leaders that were milling around, to hear some of the teachings and to do a very small part to help. It is a day I will never forget.

Thank for for making the Unleash party so wonderful for those of us who attended! It was the dedication of folks like you that we brought back with us and have used to inspire the same in our members.
Thank you for setting the bar so high. It makes us have to get out of our complacency in order to come up to where NewSpringers already are!

Your title had me fooled. I agree that he makes worshiping and loving the Lord fun, exactly what it should be! Great leader, inspirational speaker, and tell it to your face honeststy!

Just ran across your post and just returned from Unleash 08. Our team has been greatly impacted by Perry and the success he draws out of the people around him…great post!

u r soooo mean!
why are you trashing a man who is trying, and succeeding, in leading people to Christ. u obviously need Christ more than some people.
if u have the time to sit in your mothers basement and type this, u need to get your big fat butt off your seat and get a job, get married, have kids, and make your momma proud! i may only be 13, but i obviously have more since than u do! u were right about hate being such a strong word, it is, so don’t use it! perry has done more things since 1990(when he accepted Christ into his life) than u could ever imagine! he led my best friends’ dad to Christ in only 1, yes 1, sermon. try that buddy boy! we’ve had over 2,000 people be babtised in one day. so next time you wanna talk about someone, stop and think about what i’ve said.
Joe // May 5, 2008 at 1:44 pm |
Lauren,
You really ought to read what I wrote before launching into an attack on me. You see, I think Perry is doing an absolutely remarkable job at NewSpring. God is obviously blessing him and his ministry; I pray for even greater deeds to spring from him.
Besides, my mother doesn’t have a basement (and she lives too far from me to run to it and write, even if she did), I do have a job, I am married, I do have kids and I’m glad you have more “since” than I do.
I will grant, however, that my butt probably is fatter than it should be and I probably should get off it more often. It’s also been a long time since I was called “buddy boy” — thanks!

Lauren is funny. Man you really can’t judge a “blog” by the title. Having worked at NS for a while, I know Pastor P and he really IS the man.

I know a young lady in Anderson that is like my second daughter. When she began in New Spring a couple of years ago, she was disillusioned with church as she had just experienced a church split. She knew Jesus but only in the confines of occult like teaching. Because of the passion that Jesus has given to Perry, she has been able to discover Jesus the way He always meant her to. She is bearing fruit in her life which is a sign to me that what New Spring is about is real.
Joe // June 30, 2008 at 10:58 am |
Karen,
What you noted is what jazzes me up! The zeal to reach the unreachable, the passion to give life to those who are dying, love — simple, real love — is what Perry and NewSpring is about. It is what drives me in my own walk and when I see others doing the same, I want to share it.
And what better way to share it than to use a title that will get the attention of everyone!
Thanks for stopping in and for sharing.

I’ve been going to New Springs for the past few weeks now, and I can’t seem to get enough. I wish that their were more days of the week to hear his messages. The first time I came you could feel the Holy Sprit all in that place, something that I haven’t felt like anywhere else.
The music, and the words to the songs really make you think, of how good God really is.
Thanks So Much Perry

What a catching title…my mouth literally dropped. I was astounded to read such a horrible statement…but, I luckily proceeded to read the rest of the post and am so thankful for doing so! I wholeheartedly agree. I don’t know how many people I’ve pointed to watch Him because I can’t help but see God….and who doesn’t want to see and be a part of that? Thanks for the post.

This guy is not a good pastor.
Joe // February 8, 2009 at 4:04 pm |
David,
An opinion is not a statement of fact. It is simply that, an opinion. If you’re a an active member at NewSpring you at least have some merit to base a viable opinion upon; if not, it has no value.
Paul Trip // February 7, 2009 at 11:06 pm |
I agree, just watched it myself. False shepherd and a hirling according to scripture. KEEP AWAY!!!!
Joe // February 8, 2009 at 4:18 pm |
Paul,
Who are you? What gives you the right and authority to pontificate about the heretical stance of a man based upon a single video? I’d suggest dropping that stone before firing it off in such haste.
Are you and David related? If not, you’d best check your computer because David is using it!

Perry Noble is a sicko. He even looks like a angry maniac possessed by the devil. Most of you who follow goat herders like him are probably children of the Devil just like he is.
Joe // April 14, 2009 at 9:54 am |
My, my…
I’m curious as to why you are being so charitable in your faith.
Daniel // April 25, 2009 at 3:44 pm |
WOW… if God has not showed up in your room and told you to your face that Perry is a “false whatever,” possessed… I’m with Joe.. drop the stone and check yourself before you criticize a man of God. Don’t continue making the mistake that “religion” “denomination”, and “theology” has more value than Jesus. Go check out some sermons on Newspring’s site. Some people are SO “religious” that you need to be offended that you might know Jesus. I am SO thankful that God is NOT a God of religion, denomination.. Oh yeah.. most people that are trying to throw stones are the very people Jesus talked about that he despised. Funny how the stones just don’t even hit Perry thanks to the presence of God being all up in him and around him.

The thing about NewSpring and Perry is that it is, without intent, always about NewSpring and Perry…and people do love Perry…

Thank you for stopping by. Thank you for your piece on SSC/NS. Fair, insightful and spoken with longing for what could and should have been. May you find what you are seeking. Please continue to blog; my perusal of your mental calisthenics left me encouraged.
